The Science behind Dry, Flaky and Inflamed Skin Conditions

Maintaining and enhancing the epidermal basal layer (stratum basale) which produces new skin cells requires a constant supply of lipids. Many skin types would benefit from greater lipid density and various skin conditions can be improved by ceramide boosting. Ceramides are the key building blocks for lipid manufacture.

Ceramides

ceramide boostingMaintaining and enhancing the epidermal basal layer (which produces new skin cells) requires a constant supply of lipids. The basic building blocks of lipids are ceramides and as such, ceramide boosting can massively improve skin lipid density thus boosting barrier function and moisture levels in the skin.

Supplying the full range and the right balance of the nine ceramides along with Fatty Acids and Cholesterol all contribute to better lipid density in the skin membranes and in the intercellular spaces in between.

The provision of phyto-sphingosine and palmitic acid which can convert to sphingosine can be used to generate other key skin ceramides such IV and V. Also, supplying key skin barrier lipids such as cholesterol and fatty acids help prevent moisture loss from the skin to deliver effective skin barrier repair. Doing all of this allows us provides us with the right levels and the full range of ceramides to optimally control skin water loss

Many skin types would benefit from greater lipid density and various skin conditions can be improved by ceramide boosting. Ceramides are the key building blocks for lipid manufacture and are composed of sphingosine and a fatty acid and are found in high concentrations within the cell membrane of cells. They are one of the component lipids that make up sphingomyelin, one of the major lipids in the skin cell lipid membrane.

Dry and Oily Skin Conditions

Lipid enhancement can benefit dry skin seen psoriasis to eczema and even ichthyosis, where an inability to maintain skin water content can exacerbate the situation. It is also well known that acne sufferers lose skin fatty acids - linoleic acid in particular causing the skin to increase oil production to counter lipid loss. Aknicare®, our medical device for acne helps restore linoleic acid and slows down its abnormal loss from the skin.

Chronic Acne

In long term acne sufferers, low lipid density combined with a low level of water binding agents causes irregular rates of skin cell production and excessive oil production. Sufferers who have never really got on top of their acne prone skin have found that ceramide boosting and increasing skin hydration has delivered amazing results. Lipid boosting appears to raise the skins threshold level to acne triggering.

Angry Skin

inflamed skinMany dry skin conditions also have associated inflammation, and we know UV rays can also cause skin inflammation often leading to excessive pigmentation production, reddening skin, tissue damage, thread veins and a distressed skin. So protecting skin from UV is important, but so is providing natural calming ingredients. This can also provide relief to the itchiness associated with some skin conditions.

Although ichthyosis, psoriasis and eczema are medical conditions, the symptoms of dry, itchy skin in particular can be effectively managed by addressing the issues mentioned above. We have letters from mothers whose children with skin conditions have used our lipid boosting systems and have found they have been able to reduce prescription medication.

Water Binding

Natural based molecules - saccharide isomerate and hyaluronic acid - are able to bind water in the skin, thus helping to reduce inter-cellular water loss. Combining this with lipid boosting can further enhance skin hydration. Providing the correct ceramides for lipid enhancement and also key skin barrier lipids such as cholesterol and fatty acids help prevent moisture loss from the skin to deliver effective skin barrier repair.

Hydratime® Nutritime®

hydratime and nutritime

Hydratime® day cream and Nutritime® night cream is a dermacosmetic management system, particularly effective for dry, itchy, irritated skin conditions due to its superb upper skin hydration.

They nourish deeply by providing the complete range of ceramides in combination with other functional ingredients which support skin lipid density. Hydration is achieved by the activity of Hyaluronic Acid and Saccharide Isomerate enhancing moisture levels.

Hydratime® and Nutritime® sustain, protect and re-establish the skin's barrier properties. They provide sun protection, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents. Absorbable forms of Vitamins C and E combine to calm irritated itchy dry skin.
